Wedding Day

Sunday, May 31, 2009 at 8:58 AM

I will post more photos but here is one early in the day.  Glenn on the left, his best man Craig on the left.  It was a beautiful day, at least in the early part.  It began to rain as they came out of the church so there were no photos in a garden, but they took some nice ones at the reception.

My wedding gift to Glenn and Grace

Friday, May 29, 2009 at 5:49 PM

Glenn dropped by to say hello, I had the wedding gift ready for them.  He will take it over to Grace's and open it with her there.  The vest of his tux didn't fit and they had to make adjustments, he will get it on his way to Grace's.  Craig, his brother and best man asked Glenn to pick his up while he was there...it may not fit!  Another usher's shirt was so tight at the neck he couldn't do it up.  I got right on the telephone and shook Craig through the wire...he is on his way to try the tux onl.  SHEEEEESH!!!!

One Day Before the Wedding

at 8:22 AM
The rehearsal and dinner went well, we are still mostly confused but a few of us know what to do and the others will follow. Glenn and Grace looked happy at the dinner.  When she came down the aisle with her dad for the first trial, I welled up with tears (happy ones).  I'm getting so excited.  Sadly, my mom will not be able to leave the hospital to come to the wedding...they said it would be dangerous for her.  I will go to Montreal next week and bring a set of photos for her digital photo frame.

I am home today, cleaning the house this morning, picking up a few last things at the cosmetic counter and getting the cars washed.  I will get a consultant to help me with the colours.  I want to do my own make up.  I also need to get a wedding card for the cheque I will give them.  Better not forget that!  Need to polish up a few words I get to say at the reception too.  I am going to tell the little known story of their first date!

Glenn tells me I have to be ready for the photographer by 10:30 tomorrow morning.   I think I had better move my hair appointment back to 800 am instead of 8:30.   I will try to relax after the photographer, and we leave for the church just before noon.

Busy day today!  I am getting so excited!!!

Dessert at Bernadette's

Saturday, May 23, 2009 at 11:23 AM

Bernadette and Sam invited me to drop by for dessert last night. I found a parking spot in their lot and arrived almost on time. It is always a treat to eat with these two, Sam goes all out to make great tasty dishes. Pears Poached in Sauterne with chocolate and raspberry sauces garnished with mango slices, did not disappoint. He served it with flair too! Kudos Sam!!

Part of the treat when eating at Bernadette's is her sunroom with a view, a closed in balcony overlooking the city. You can see almost all the way to Lake Ontario, downtown, CN Tower, parks and woodlands across the city. It is just wonderful to sit at their bistro table and enjoy the view, while sipping good coffee and enjoying a fantastic 5-star dessert!

Below a pretty lamp and little windmill Bernadette has picked up in her travels. I think the windmill was a gift from her son when he visited Holland.

When the plates were gone I noticed I had spilled chocolate sauce on her pretty yellow placemat. So sorry, Bernadette. Hope you got the Spray N Wash on it before it set. Bernadette, you can dress me up but you can't . . .
Part of the view from the room with a view, very pretty at night
I checked out her latest knitting project, and a few things I hadn't seen before. Below is a cute little tic tac toe game with plants and watering cans instead of x's and o's

Glenn and Grace - 2 weeks to the wedding

Tuesday, May 19, 2009 at 1:38 PM

They are both pretty excited and a little nervous about the the approaching big day.  They came for a barbecue yesterday.  Grace was saying that she can't believe it is only 2 weeks away and she gave a little gasp!  Glenn said relax, the work is all done, let's just let it happen and enjoy!  I am so very happy for them...but the work is not all done!  There are so many last minute things to take care of.  No time to spare, the clock ticks relentlessly...we'll get there!  Such fun!!

Is there a Twitter bot out there?

Monday, May 18, 2009 at 9:56 AM

Just wondering because every time I tweet, I get 5 or 6 followers. I don't even know these people.  There must be a bot out there crawling Twitter tweets and automatically adding people.  It just isn't possible that so many total strangers want to follow me, get to my twitter page and click a button, just a few seconds after each tweet.  What's in it for them?  I don't reciprocate by following them so don't even get their tweets.  What's the point?  For that matter, what is the point of Twitter?

Where the hell is Matt?

Sunday, May 17, 2009 at 10:10 AM
One of those heart-warming stories I bump in to now and then, and smile.  Here is how Matt got 2387 people from all over the world to dance (badly) with him.  This is the short Ignite version.

And here is where he did it.  For many move videos of Matt's adventure on YouTube, just search "Where the hell is Matt?"

Animated Frog

at 6:53 AM
I stumbled across this little animation, and noticed the creator had done a few more. They are very well done, very short and the little frog is so cute he could develop a cult following or a career in television commercials like Aflac Duck. Although, they might need to rename him.

The dialogue goes as follows: "So there I was at the pub, right, and this bloke walks up to me and he's like 'Hey, what's a frog doing in the pub?' And I say, well, I'm having a drink. And he says 'Well, alright then. Let me buy you another.' So he does, and we walk away best of friends."

... But anyways, there I was at the pub, right, this bloke walks in with his pet giraffe. Who in the world would have a pet giraffe, I don't know, but this guy had one. Anyways, he walks up to the bar and buys himself a drink, buys the giraffe a drink. Guy drinks his drink, and the giraffe drinks it's drink, and then the giraffe falls over dead. Well, the guy gets up to walk out, and the bartender's like " 'EY! You can't leave that lyin' there!" And the guy turns around, he says "It's not a lion. It's a giraffe."

"So there I was at the pub, right, and this bloke walks up and says "Hey, you're sittin' in me favorite chair." And I says, "Well, I been sittin' here all day, how can it be your favorite chair?" He says "I sit here all the other times," and I says "Well, I been here all day, an' I got dibs." And he says "you can't have dibs on a chair," and I says, "well, there you go."

Howtoons: Inspiration for Kids and Kids at Heart

Saturday, May 16, 2009 at 10:52 AM
Saul Griffith presents an Ignite talk entitled "Subverting science education: HOWTOONS seeks to put joy, story, adventure, free-spirit, fun & ridiculousness, back into informal science education."
You will find the ending of this excellent and inspiring presentation, hilarious. I am on my way out to find Howtoons at the bookstore. I think every kid, or kid at heart, should be reading these. Best educational tool I have seen in ages...really turns kids on to science and engineering...makes geeks heroes. "Childhood is your last chance to be a hero!"

The Secret History of Fonts

at 9:45 AM
love this Posterous posting, I can do it from absolutely anywhere! Because even away from home, I can usually get on a computer somewhere to send off an email post. I am still testing ways to use it. I have a video to share with you and hope I can embed via email to Posterous. Here goes...(don't worry, if it doesn't work I will come back at Posterous to fix it if possible) and I am also posting the direct url here: (edit note: It worked both ways, they both embedded, I have removed one to save space)
Here is an interesting presentation on The Secret History of Fonts. The presenter Bram Pitoyo, is a fontophile, a geek who loves and knows everything about fonts. Enjoy! The sound is a little wonky but the material is great! Ignite is an organization that is springing up in many cities around the world. Great for honing your presentation skills. You get 5 minutes to present 20 slides, each automatically advancing every 15 seconds. The presentations share information quickly and have impact. You can find more of them at YouTube. ..and btw, you can follow Bram Pitoya on Twitter.

GM Plant closes in Oshawa Ontario

Thursday, May 14, 2009 at 5:08 PM
The last truck rolled off the line today at the GM plant in Oshawa. I live about 15 minutes from Oshawa. When the closure was announced about a year ago, it had a big impact on the economy here--first thing, housing prices plummeted and the ripples were felt everywhere. Most people who live in Oshawa worked for GM. Workers finished their shift and filed out of the plant, the parade was like a funeral march. The last truck was won in a draw by a plant supervisor.

Meyer Lemon Tree

Tuesday, May 12, 2009 at 8:48 PM

Just a few slides to show you this little Meyer Lemon tree I bought at a Chinese mall at lunch time recently; it was the only one they had and I haven't seen them anywhere else. Wish me luck.

I think it will be quite nice after a summer on my patio. I have had it outdoors for about a week since I bought it but tonight we are supposed to have some frost so I have brought it indoors. I notice one of the lemons went black, probably from cold last night. Ok, I have learned my lesson, I cannot rush things. I will pay attention to the weather forecasts and move it indoors and out as needed until the end of the month.

The shape of this little tree is not very nice, yet. I hope it will fill in nicely so I can prune it into a more pretty shape. It will winter in my kitchen at the patio door.

Lemonade anyone?

Rhubarb and birds

at 6:50 PM

I bought this birdbath on one of my day trips last summer, it is made of cement imprinted with a large rhubarb leaf. Last summer I had it in the front of the house under a tree near my garden but hardly every saw it there. Neighbourhood dogs drank from it but I don't think many birds splashed in it. This year, I have moved it to the back, on the edge of my deck. The rhubarb is growing next to it; I think it looks very nice.

However, trouble lurks. A little cat has moved in to the neighbourhood and he has decided he likes my patio. He crawls under the fence and sits near the rhubarb birdbath and the other taller one. I think he is after the birds! I like him even though he isn't very friendly...but I think I enjoy the birds more. At dinner tonight I saw the kitty sitting right under the bird feeder! Two birdbaths, a feeder full of niger seed and I haven't seen a bird around for a few days. A battle is about to begin.

Perfume Tester

Sunday, May 3, 2009 at 9:11 AM

#stoneThe little girl in this photo was testing all the designer perfumes at this Duty Free Shop in Cancun Airport. The shelf was just the right height for her and she moved right to the end, spraying herself with every perfume she picked up. I bet she was a delight when she and her mom boarded.
I took this surreptitiously but I just had to. Had I been bolder I would have taken a close-up of her spraying.
